Lake Oroville

Oroville, CA

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Oroville is one of the best spotted bass fisheries in the state. The lake also hosts largemouth and smallmouth as well, however the spotted bass dominate!

The scenery here is next to none, the water is gin clear, we’re often fishing waterfalls, and the bass are stacked in mind blowing proportions during the spring. Fifty fish days are extremely common. The fish’s diets consist primarily of “Wakasagi Minnow” aka “pond smelt,” which happen to be a perfect fly size. Great for 6 weight rods which is a very fun rod when it comes to playing bass.

The main draw to Oroville is fish size and numbers. There aren’t too many places in the state that can produce such quality fish in such great numbers. Lake Oroville is a year-round fishery, even having a spectacular winter bite during normal years. Fly anglers use the “Float ‘N Fly”, tactic during the colder months. When the water warms, topwater and streamer fishing will be the methods of choice. No other bass fishery in California has so many fish ready and willing to hit a topwater fly. Some bass lakes fish better than others for topwater, and Lake Oroville is the #1 best option around the north state.
