Baum Lake is truly a fly fisher’s paradise. With year-round cold water, a rich volcanic mineral bottom, and a hatchery located on its banks, what else would you need? How about a place to hone your skills, or a place that will try your patience, and a venue that you will fall in love with? That is Baum Lake – buckle up.
Baum Lake is a man-made impoundment. In the early 1900s, Red River Lumber Company, located in Westwood, CA, sought additional electrical power to run its huge lumber mill. It already had a hydroelectric power plant on the Hamilton Branch located just west of the town of Westwood. To expand the lumber mill, Red River's owner, T.B. Walker, needed more electricity. He hired a man named Frank Baum to find him someone who needed power. Baum conceived what are known as the Hat Creek Powerhouse Number 1 and Hat Creek Powerhouse Number 2. Baum Lake was designed solely for hydroelectric power.
Callibaetis, damsels, and Midges fuel this lake. Not to mention the Carpenter Ant hatch, which is truly spectacular. It’s a beautiful place to fish.

This tour focuses on learning how to fish this singular stillwater. Skills learned here at this lake can be transferred to other stillwaters.
This is a full-day tour. We will show you the lake using our Fishcraft driftboat, the lake’s transition zones, and how we fish them. We will review equipment, rigging, and all safety factors involved in fishing on a lake. We will have a lakeshore lunch and then work on new skills while fishing for the rest of the tour.

The one-day tour fee is $200 per guest, with a maximum of 3 anglers per instructor. Transportation and handouts for the tour will include maps, access areas, flies, unique setups, recommended equipment, and other features specific to the fishery. A complete list of required equipment is included in the confirmation package. Guests must possess a valid California fishing license and bring their equipment and personal watercraft wading gear (equipment is available if required).
