Lance’s Swinging Bird’s Nest Olive Size 12

I designed this fly out of necessity. I wanted a bird’s nest in my box that I could swing. These flies came to me one day as I was tying a couple of hundred Thurman’s Jigged Bird’s Nest for The Fly Shop in Redding, CA. I figured I would tie some on one of my favorite hooks the Firehole Model 718 hook. I tied a natural brown first. I had maybe three or four of them. I put them in my Driftboat Fly Box. A couple weeks later in spring I was guiding on the Feather River and my guest (that is what I call me clients) was swinging different flies. The day was going okay and then I saw the Swinging Bird’s Nest in my box. I re-did the leader to a 12-foot fluorocarbon leader to 4X tippet and tied on one of the Swinging Bird’s Nest. A couple of casts and bam, a nice spring steelie. We landed another five fish that day. These flies work! I fish these Bird’s Nest on long 9-to-12-foot fluorocarbon leaders on a floating fly line.

This fly represents the Brachycentrus Caddis. Available to the trout on the Lower Sacramento during Springtime months. I swing this Bird’s Nest on long 9-to-12-foot 4X fluorocarbon tapered leaders on a floating fly line.
