Lance's Mega Floating Pond Smelt Size 2
Milt Jensen designed this fly back in the 1980’s and it still fishes great today. I have tweaked this fly a little. I removed the marabou tail and added on Puglisi 3D Silky Fibers for the tail. Other than that, it is tied the same as the original. A great fly for Lake Almanor, Lake Oroville and Butt Valley Reservoir. I fish this fly on a floating line with a 71/2-foot 2X or 3X tapered monofilament leader.
The “Mega” pond smelt is tied Milt Jensen version, but I place this big smelt on a size 2 saltwater hook. Originally designed for Snook and Baby Tarpon in the Mangroves, this smelt represents large females in the Fall months on Lake Almanor, Butt Valley and Lake Oroville.
