American River

American River

The American River is home to steelhead and stripers. This tail-water fishery that begins its 23-mile stretch from Nimbus Dam is an awesome fishery located in the heart of Sacramento.  It has a 5-mph speed limit that keeps jet boats and jet skis off of it. It also is a popular destination for kayakers, canoe-paddlers and host of individuals using the river for peaceful recreation. The river has stretches with very limited foot access and it's tailor-made for drift-boat fishing. The steelhead are late arrivals when compared to the rest of the valley fisheries – they start moving in late December and continue until February. The steelhead, on average, are larger than the rest of the valley (4 to 7 pounds, with some reaching into double digits).

The stripers are found in the river from May through August and some of them are huge. Fly- fishing for them is a fantastic way to spend the day. Our striper expert, Toby Uppinghouse, will guide you while you cast for this great fish. Toby utilizes his 19-foot motorized Fishcraft drift boat that enables him to follow the fish. These fish are incredible on a fly rod!
